Writing Resumes

Having a professional, up-to-date resume is one of the most important tools for finding a job.   While earning your college degree is extremely important, often it is not enough in itself to guarantee job interviews in your field.  Employers also want to see skills not always evidenced by the college degree itself.  A well-written resume can illustrate these additional work-related skills such as communication, writing, customer service, organization, and problem-solving skills.   While the labor market will always favor college graduates, according to the Federal Consumer Information Center, it is likely that there will always be more jobseekers with college degrees than there are openings for college-level jobs.  So a professional resume is essential in this competitive job market in order to generate quality interviews in your chosen field.

Writing a resume requires time, thought, and periods of "re-writing."  However, it need not be a stressful exercise. Resume guide sheets can be requested by e-mail or obtained by visiting the career office.

Samples of resumes, as well as samples of cover letters, can be found in the campus library.  Just ask the librarian to direct you to the career section, where you will find a large selection of books on career topics.  It is best to have the career counselor "check" and review your resume draft so that your finished resume will be free of errors and as professional and complete as possible.
