Kent State University at Salem Hires First Faculty Member for the Only Bachelor’s Degree in Insurance Studies in Ohio.

Posted Aug. 26, 2012

Kent State University at Salem is committed to developing academic programs that will provide long term career and professional opportunities to its students and graduates.  This fall, students are enrolling in the new Bachelor’s Degree in Insurance Studies program, the only such program currently available in Ohio.

By 2016, Ohio’s insurance industry workforce is projected to grow by 7.1 percent. More than 100,000 Ohioans are employed in the insurance industry with an average salary greater than $50,000. Insurance careers reach far beyond just sales. Our graduates will be qualified to pursue a career as a broker, claims examiner, loss prevention specialist, risk manager, underwriter, actuary, claims adjuster and more.

“Kent State is pleased to be able to offer students the opportunity to enroll in a degree program that will capitalize on the predicted job growth of the insurance industry,” according to the campus dean, Dr. Stephen Nameth.  He added “We excited to be able to hire an experienced industry professional, like Carol Blaine to help our students learn about these opportunities. “

Blaine is a thirty-year insurance industry executive who’s led multiple insurance company business units including operations, information technology, regulatory compliance, product development, claims, human resources, pricing, product development and corporate communications.  Prior to joining Kent State Salem, she served multiple insurance organizations including J.C. Penney Casualty Insurance Company, Midland Mutual Life, American Commerce Insurance Company, Century Insurance Group, and, most recently, Nationwide Insurance.

Blaine holds her masters of business administration from the J. L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University where she received the Dean’s Distinguished Service Award. She holds the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Associate in Research and Planning (ARP) designations from the Insurance Institute of America as well as the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute and the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) (inactive) from the HR Certification Institute.

Blaine chaired the Education Committee for the Ohio Insurance Institute from 2001 through 2011 and has presented at numerous conferences including, "Insurance: Engaging Future Generations" at the Insurance Education Day Advisory Council’s Insurance Education Day and International Quality and Productivity Center’s, “Implementing & Maintaining the Balanced Scorecard in Insurance Companies.”
